Are You COACHABLE?

Hello LWA Seekers of Greater Well-BEing!

Need to make any changes in your life?  Duh?  We all do!  My dad was full of “one-liners” which were often pearls of wisdom.  I once told him how impressed I was with the fact that even in his 90s he continued to make changes to improve his life, like joining a gym at age 92!  His reply: “If you stop improving, you might as well be dead.”  To make significant elevations in our health, work, relationships, or other areas of life takes implementing LWA Essential Element #11:  Seek and Secure Support.

An important question:  Are you COACHABLE?  One of my favorite quotes is by Isaac Newton: “If I have seen further than others it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”  I have stood on the shoulders of so many my entire life and continue to do so.  I make an effort to listen, learn, and live their wisdom. The truth:  There are so many who want to help us succeed.  They are everywhere!  But are we coachable?  Being coachable means:

  • You have an aspect of your life you really want to improve.

  • You seek people who have what you want and are willing to share how they got it.

  • You are willing to be vulnerable, to be challenged, to question your SLBS (self-limiting belief system).

  • You are willing to LISTEN, LEARN, and LIVE their keys to succeed.

  • You are NOT focused on the past, whether it be challenges or accomplishments.  You are focused on the person you want to BEcome.  YOU ARE NOT DONE!

It really boils down to:  Are you a “has been” or “wanna BE” person?  It’s easy to differentiate.  A “has been” is living in the past, focusing on past accomplishments, past failures, past negatives:  PAST, PAST, PAST.  They will tell you how great they are, what they have done, how they are “right” and others are wrong, and often, focus on negative life events that are ruling their lives.  They are victims.  They have a Fixed Mindset.  They already know it all.  They are right.

The “wanna BE” individuals are NOT living in the past or focusing on the negatives. They may be accomplished, very successful, but you’ll never hear it from them.  They don’t talk about themselves or focus on past negative events – which may have been horrendous at the time.  You’ll never know, because they aren’t victims. They are victorious.  If they do mention unwanted events from the past, it’s only as a blessing – something they learned from – to help others who may be struggling with similar issues.  They often look at past, or present, challenging events as gifts.  In fact, the “wanna BE” individuals are the quiet ones in the room. They usually don’t talk much at all – unless they are with other “wanna BE” people, having a real conversation, Listening and Learning from each other, to Live a more fulfilling life. They feed off each other. The energy between them is palpable. They have a Growth Mindset, an LCBS (Life-Changing Belief System).  They are Living WELL Aware!

Speaking of coachable, I had the privilege of attending a college basketball game a couple weeks ago and meeting up with the winning coach at a restaurant after the game. I asked him about the challenges of being a coach. He related that some players are so coachable while others, who have much greater ability, are not coachable and will not achieve their potential. It’s the same in the game in life.

Brag Time:  No, not about me!  My husband, Dr. Waxman. He’s the quiet one in the room, wanting to know about everyone else, listening and learning. He’ll never tell you he is “right” or talk about his MANY accomplishments (like operating on babies and little children, speaking several languages, playing several musical instruments – I could go on and on).  He wants to know about YOU.   Now, if you are a “wanna BE”, get ready!  He has a lot to offer on the attributes of striving to live a fulfilling life and loves real “conversations” where there is an actual exchange of ideas, information, and a search for the truth – a longing for using our talents, living out our God given purpose to help others.

Are you coachable?  Are you a “has been” or a “wanna BE”? Living WELL Aware is all about BEcoming the amazing version we are capable of BEing, with a life of Peace, Joy, and Success in using our talents, fulfilling our Mission! Thanks for traveling with us.
