WHY ARE SCHOOLS
CHOOSING OUR PROGRAM?

It’s available! The adolescent health curriculum developed by Living WELL Aware co-founders Patricia J. Sulak, MD and Jeffrey A. Waxman, MD is now available and being implemented in private and public schools.  Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from students, parents, and instructors.

WHY ARE SCHOOLS CHOOSING OUR PROGRAM?  Here are 10 reasons:

  1. Dr. Sulak has been involved in adolescent health since 1995 and was given the Heroes for Children Award by the Texas State Board of Education and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Community Service Award for her work with school health.  Parents and schools trust the messages delivered by Dr. Sulak, making her curricula one of the most commonly used by school districts in Texas.  Her current curriculum is unsurpassed, addressing deficiencies seen in other programs.

  2. The curriculum is age appropriate with 3 grade levels (6th, 7th, 8th).   Each level builds on the other, adding information and topics that are relevant to the age group.

  3. The program covers all the critical topics needed by our youth today including lessons on drug abuse, violence, bullying, digital dangers, social media, sexual abuse, assault, age of consent, trafficking, essential communication skills, healthy and dangerous relationships, goal planning, and much more.  The curriculum provides a framework for avoiding all risky behaviors and leading a healthy, happy life.

  4. The curricula are written by physicians, medical school professors, a child psychologist, a sexual abuse expert, health teachers, and STI and drug abuse educators.  We bring the expertise of many to classrooms and homes.

  5. All grade levels are in line with the newly released Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills health guidelines addressing not only the listed topics but the transparency requirement for parents and other guardians.

  6. The entire program is online and simple to navigate and implement in the classroom, as well as in the home through our parent/school employee videos.

  7. Health and wellness can be a difficult topic for anyone to teach.  This issue was addressed by including video presentations of expert dynamic speakers to assist the classroom instructors. There are also detailed instructor activity guides, student activity worksheets, parent worksheets, handouts, and posters with each lesson.

  8. The program promotes a team approach with handouts, worksheets, and a video presentation with every lesson for parents, other guardians, and instructors explaining what each lesson will include along with additional wellness information for adults.  The videos for adults are available free to everyone on the livingwellaware.com website under the Adolescent Wellness tab.

  9. Teacher training, school employee wellness workshops, and community presentations are available to create an even greater team approach to health.

  10. So much is being demanded of our schools today.  Our program is efficient and cost effective, simplifying what can be a time-consuming, expensive requirement.  Rather than searching for numerous outside speakers or multiple curricula, a low subscription fee provides access to all the information essential for our youth.

Our Youth, Our Future

The promotion of adolescent health has never been more important.  Here are some FACTS:

  • The top 3 killers of adolescents accounting for over 70% of all deaths:  Accidents (including accidental drug overdoses), Suicide, and Murder.

  • Mortality INCREASED 19% among our youth ages 1 to 19 between 2019 – 2021.  These deaths were primarily due to injuries – accidental and self-inflicted.

  • Among children and adolescents, suicide has increased 70% in the last 20 years.

  • Between 2019 – 2020, among children and adolescents:

o   Murders increased 39%

o   Drug overdoses increased 113%

Are these alarming trends occurring only among adolescents?  NO!  Health declines are occurring in all age groups.  What’s the Answer?  We all need to be Living WELL Aware!
