Ever find yourself having a “bad day” over some issue that unexpectedly arose? We all do. In today’s world of constant negativity (just turn on the TV or pick up a newspaper), it’s easy for us to be lured into a state of unhappiness. Example: Ever have computer issues?
It was Friday afternoon, and I was looking forward to having a nice quiet dinner at home with my husband that evening. He called that afternoon notifying me that his computer had crashed. He called tech support, who didn’t have a quick fix but said they could take a look at it that evening at their outlet in Austin – over an hour’s drive away. (And, it was the Friday before Memorial Day weekend with Interstate 35 traffic!)
He was obviously frustrated because he needed his computer for many reasons including working on an online course he had recently enrolled in, downloaded, and needed to work on during the weekend. I was disappointed because I had planned a nice dinner at home after a work laden week.
What did we need? An Attitude Adjustment! I sensed this was not the way to start the weekend. I told him “Hey, no problem. Let’s head to Austin together, make the appointment, then find a place to eat.” We had to enter a state of GRATITUDE knowing how blessed we are to have computers and to be able to drive to Austin to get it fixed. We needed to dump the “things should always go my way” mindset.
Happiness comes from the inside not the outside. Life will never be perfect. People will never do exactly what we want them to. To me, happiness is a state of peace, joy, and love: PEACE with unwanted past events and current situations that are not going as we would wish. Finding JOY even in the mundane tasks and the many blessings we have. The ability to LOVE our family, friends and others, even in difficult times. For me personally, happiness is a connection with a higher power as I strive to be the best version I am capable of being – no matter what life circumstances. It’s knowing that I am not in control of most of life events, life is transient, and, importantly, I am not perfect and neither are others.
Choose to be happy! Start and end each day in a state of GRATITUDE. Look for the good in everyone and everything, rather than focusing on the negative. Search for peace, joy, and love in the present moment, dumping depressive thoughts of the past and anxious thoughts of the future. Let’s make a conscious decision to personally take full ownership of our emotional state and lead a life of happiness that is ours for the taking.
