Death. Not a pleasant topic but something we and our loved ones will all face. Death is a part of life. Personally, I hope you are like me. I love life and want to be on this planet as long as I can, living life to the fullest. So, let’s talk about death, but positively, from a preparation and prevention point of view. The question for all of us:
Are we hastening our death? I have been a practicing physician in the same town for over 30 years, working at the same well-respected academic medical center. What I’m seeing now compared to 20 to 30 years ago is nothing less than startling. Despite amazing medical advances, more people are unhealthier and unhappier, including many of the healthcare professionals I work with. And, the death rates confirm it. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics has confirmed that life expectancy in the U.S. has decreased 3 years in a row. That hasn’t happened since the flu epidemic of 1918.
Where are the increasing death rates coming from? The reports point to increasing rates of obesity, prediabetes/diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, suicide, drug overdoses, excessive alcohol consumption – to mention only a few.
I see this scenario all the time: A friend, patient, or colleague works for decades and then retires or is getting close to retiring, only to be faced with life-altering or deadly health issues – problems such as heart disease, stroke, dementia, degenerative joint issues that could have been prevented or forestalled for years, even decades. We all have to ask: What can I work on NOW that would improve my health, happiness, and longevity? Maybe eat healthier, move more, drink less alcohol, spend more time focusing on family, meditate/pray, get all those numbers I talk about in my book/workbook in a normal range.
Thousands in the U.S. will die this week from preventable causes. They waited too long. As my husband says: “This ain’t no dress rehearsal.” Let’s don’t put off tomorrow what needs to be begun today. We deserve better.
