FACT: Although the United States is one of the wealthiest nations worldwide and ranks #1 in total health expenditures per person, we rank 31st in the world in life expectancy, well below other industrialized countries. How would you like to live an extra decade or longer? A study just published in the medical journal Circulation (dealing with heart and blood vessel disease) gives us the answer.
5 Healthy Lifestyle Factors: Study participants who met these 5 life-style related factors lived over a decade longer than those who did not meet them:
- Healthy Diet: high in veggies, nuts, and fruits; low in high fat dairy and red meat (i.e. a Mediterranean type food consumption)
- Physical Activity: greater than 30 minutes per day of moderate or vigorous activities
- Low Risk Alcohol Consumption: one drink or less per day for women (5 to 15 grams); two or less for men (5 to 30 grams); greater alcohol consumption DECREASED life expectancy.
- Tobacco: none
- Normal Weight: BMI of 18.5 to less than 25
These study recommendations were based on the data of over 120,000 participants followed for up to 34 years. The authors of this publication estimated that adherence to these 5 low-risk lifestyle-related factors could prolong life expectancy by 14 years for women and 12.2 years for men compared to individuals who do not adopt them. WOW! This shows the powerful outcome of Living WELL Aware! Unfortunately, the authors go on to state that in US adults, adherence to this low-risk lifestyle pattern has decreased during the last 3 decades from 15% of the population to only 8%.
